Closed 2 years in the past.
My query is: is there flexibility in how one can punctuate the word "Why not?"
The resolution might appear glaring to start with...it is a query after all. However, it is also a not unusual idiom, and I'm questioning if that provides a choice in how it is punctuated. I became concerned with this after seeing dictionaries, together with Cambridge and Collins, the use of the word in example sentences sans the question mark:
"Do you want Italian food tonight?" "Sure, why not."
.
I said we were, too, so he said why not let him take us to dinner somewhere after which all come together.
The 2nd example sounds especially fallacious, and as if it is missing citation marks. Of direction, maximum dictionary examples of the word in a sentence included question marks. So are the provided examples above mistakes?
Edit: The first remark suggesting this can be a conceivable reproduction hyperlinks to a observation, not a question.
